Dear friend of Global Women’s Project,
With my strong dislike for humidity, I am always relieved when the summer draws to a close and the fall weather starts. However, I would be much less excited for late fall and winter if I thought that I might not have warm, stable housing in which to spend those cold nights.
I am grateful for the work that our partner Growing Grounds does in Wabash County, IN to support local families experiencing housing insecurity. When local motels have tried to price gouge monthly rental prices (asking $2,000/month plus utilities for a room in a county where many still make the $8.00 minimum wage!), Growing Grounds has sought out opportunities to partner with other organizations to liaise with local businesses and look for solutions. In collaboration with Housing Action of Wabash County (HAWC), they successfully negotiated with a local motel to set the rate at a more affordable $900/month, providing a much-needed temporary safety net for struggling families.
Growing Grounds has also focused outreach on high school students experiencing homelessness by coordinating with school counselors and identifying resources to help them find safe housing and remain in school.
Safe and stable housing is so fundamental to daily safety and security, and we are honored to be a partner in Growing Grounds ongoing work. As we head into fall, we encourage you to keep the colder months on your mind. Keep an eye out next month for some updates about our annual advent calendar, GWP outreach at NOAC, and more!
Blessings,
Sarah Ullom-Minnich
